LONDON — There is a real communication dilemma in H1N1 the so called Swine Flu (in countries where pigs are okay.) The question is what level of communication is the right level? If we make too much of it we are fear-mongering. If we make too little we are being ignorant and foolish.
The UK now has the third highest level of infection after the USA and Mexico. And with the way we are packed into transport in urban settings it will certainly rise. The fact that schools have broken up may slow it down, but it may also take it out into the known world as Britons travel.
The papers run hot and cold on H1N1. They will have special sections, but they don’t really know what to do either. Town halls and hospitals are quietly geared up to look like something out of a Hollywood disaster movie. And yet we are all remaining calm and with our requisite stiff upper lip.
