M&A, PE firms, HR and long term results

SOUTH KENSINGTON — I was speaking to a friend who is a Master of the Universe. He’s in hiding now. Not wearing his leotards in daylight. But he’s just as busy. Doing… stuff…

Buying and selling things. Trying to refill the coffers. And not just his own pockets, but the pension plans, municipal development funds, school bursaries, etc. that he represents.

And I asked him what they were doing with the companies that they are drastically reshaping as they try to tidy them up for the new world. “We take out 5 to 10% of all costs as a basic rule,” he explains.

And how do you do that?

“We leave that to HR.”

Which is a problem that I think will come back to haunt these businesses. And it’s one that communication can help fix. I am not sure whether it is HR, PE firms, or even the much maligned existing management team, but someone has to be willing to call in change managers, like us, and organisational communicators, like us, to get it done right.
