PICCADILLY — Today the paper says Britons are three times more likely killed on bicycles than any other European state. The experience of cycling in London – if that’s anything to go by – is often quite harrowing.
As I went through Hyde Park Corner roundabout this morning on a bus there were four cyclist racing cars, pulling out ahead of buses and weaving across the path of motorcycles. The fact that roundabouts work at all is a mystery of the modern world, but I’m sure they’re not helped by random push-bikes trying to take their place in there.
Only half of these mad cyclists were wearing helmets. (If you have seen a human head hit tarmac recently, as I have, you would always wear a helmet.) One of the cyclists was sending a text message!
Why do that?
One of the certainties of working life is that you’ll have to do things that are harder and more uncomfortable than you like. You’ll have to lead in times of change. You’ll have to push your skills further than you think you can go.
Companies like ours can help. But even if you go into that change alone, go prepared. Put on a helmet. Stay in your lane, and for goodness sake don’t send a text while you’re doing it!
